Lesson Title: Indian Wars Study MapLesson Title: Indian Wars Study Map Lesson Design by Ryan Madden Tarkio R-1 School District Grade 8 American History July 2005 Lesson Overview: Students will create a map that designates where the major Indian tribes were located, where the major battles happened, and where the Native Americans were moved to (Reservations). Objectives: · To geographically locate the areas that were inhabited by the Sioux, Pawnee, Crow, Cherokee, Nez Perce, Apache, Arapaho, and other tribes. · To geographically locate where each reservation was set up. · To locate each major battle of the Indian Wars · To create a study guide for the remainder of the unit. The GLE's to be addressed are Standard 2a, concept F for 8th grade; cultural interactions among ethnic groups. Standard 5, concept A, Geographic research sources & how to use them. Concept C, Place. Concept G, Relationships between & among places and Concept I, uses of Geography. Standard 6, concept D, effect of laws & events on relationships. Standard 7, concepts B, C, & D: Using maps, graphs, timelines, etc. Creating maps and graphics. Using technological tools for research. Materials: blank U.S. map, multi-colored pens or pencils, historical atlas, markers. Class time: 1 class period (70 minutes) perhaps more. Teacher Input: This is prior to the unit. We will not go over anything prior to the assignment. Students will keep notes on the map for entire unit. Activities: Map Making Questions: Where were the tribes located? Where were the major battles? Where were/are the reservations? Closure: Ask students why we made this map. Ask why the battles happened where they happened. Ask why the reservations are located where they are located. (food for thought) ( I will answer these questions in later class periods & they will be tested on the material). Assessment: The next class period, myself and the students will go over maps and make sure everything is where it needs to be. (50 pts) pass/fail. References: Extension: Student's should write small.
