Outdoor Field Experience - Summer 2005

Our travels began with our outdoor field experience during our travels June 19 - July 2, 2005. We posted them below along with our itinerary.

In year two, we enjoyed a week of instruction on Missouri Western campus (St. Joe, Missouri), visits to the State Archives, Truman Library, and the National Archives; then a Curriculum Lab at CHS.

Sunday June 19 - Stuhr Museum, Grand Island, Nebraska

We'll be met by a museum guide and will experience several layers of plains history including: Pony Express, Oregon & Mormon Trails, Frontier Army Post, Frontier Rail Road town exhibit.

Monday June 20 - Fort Hartsuff. Burwell, Nebraska

  • Frontier Army Life tour and lecture by park superintendent. A post created to protect the Pawnee from the Sioux
  • Halsev National Forest. Halsey, Nebraska
  • CCC constructed, flora & fauna of the Sandhill region

Monday June 27 - Buffalo Bill Historical Center. Cody, Wyoming

Museum educational staff will brief us on the four museums (one hour). We'll visit all four museums: Whitney Gallery of Western Art, The buffalo Bill museum, The Plains Indian museum, and The Cody Firearms Museum Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Thursday June 30 - Wind River Indian Reservation

  • Topography, flora & fauna of the Basin region
  • Fort Robinson State Park Crawford, Nebraska
  • Guided tours by park personnel that will include the various eras of the fort's history: Red Cloud Indian Agency, Frontier Army Post Crazy Horse murder site, the Cheyenne outbreak site, remount station for the U.S. Cavalry until WWII, K-9 Corps trained here, German P.0.W.S were housed here. We'll stay in 1880's era brick army officers quarters.

Saturday, July 2 - Fort McPherson National Cemetery

A partial list of internments includes Indian scouts, an entire command of cavalry killed by the Lakota, bomber crews from W .W .II, Indian allies, Navajo "wind talkers."

HOME - Upon arrival, I will collect the Directed Trip Journals that each participant is to keep.
